Virtual Labs IITR - Introduction

Virtual Labs is a venture of the Ministry of Education (MOE), Government of India, under its National Mission on Education through Information and Communication Technology (NME-ICT).This project is set up with a motive of improving standards of laboratory and practical training imparted to Engineering and Science students in India.The state of art laboratory facility in all discipline of Engineering and Science education is developed in few institutions.This laboratory facility is then virtualized by using the internet and other related technologies.The student can access the lab of his choice and perform experiments at a most convenient time slot.He can also repeat the experiment as many times as he wishes.The experimentation and learning process is further strengthened by the detailed instructions, theory, and analysis given with each experiment.

  • The intended beneficiaries of the projects are:
    • All students and Faculty Members of Science and Engineering Colleges who do not have access to good lab facilities and instruments.
    • High school students, whose inquisitiveness will be triggered, possibly motivating them to take up higher-studies.Researchers in different institutes who can collaborate and share resources.
    • Different engineering colleges who can benefit from the content and related teaching resources.
    • Virtual Labs do not require any additional infrastructural setup for conducting experiments at user premises.The simulations-based experiments can be accessed remotely via internet.
    • The ability to perform, record and learn experiments - anywhere, anytime, and individualized practice in all areas of experimentation.

Outreach Activities

The 'learning-enabled assessment' through VLabs facilitates in the assessment of the procedural and manipulative skills of the experiment, the concepts and understanding of the experiment and a student's reporting and interpreting skills.

The development of Virtual Labs includes the study and use of mathematical techniques to demonstrate the various complex functions in diverse areas of science.The labs make use of cutting edge simulation technology to create real world lab environments.Thorough study and research is done by research personnel for better understanding of the experimental procedures.Real lab scenarios are captured through live demonstration of the experiment so as to assimilate information on the procedures and lab equipment.Visualization and development of the graphical symbols are done based on realistic situations and compared with the respective real equipment.Simulations are made interactive using various authoring tools, thus recreating and simulating a real lab environment.
